4G / LTE / MultiMode vs Single Mode LTE Chip Sets
« on: September 15, 2014, 05:02:16 PM »
VoLTE does theoretically enable carriers to eventually decommission their 3G networks and rely entirely on LTE for both voice and data. In turn, this implies that phones and devices sold on those networks would become single-mode LTE devices

However, until every last subscriber is converted over to VoLTE - which we estimate takes a minimum 5+ years - a carrier cannot take down its last channel of 3G spectrum. Until conversion hits 100%, we believe that the carriers have no incentive to sell single-mode LTE phones since, as long as the 3G network is still physically there to support somebody, it might as well continue to function as a fallback insurance policy for everybody at zero extra cost to the carrier.

Qualcomm is one of the few vendors to offer an integrated VoLTE solution. Additionally, they are in the process of manufacturing
at least their second generation of VoLTE chips with improved battery life
