3G / HSPA / EVDO / Idea Revenue Market Share in 3G vs Non 3G Circles
« on: January 08, 2015, 11:57:16 AM »
The 11 circles where Idea won 2100 MHz 3G spectrum in 2010 contributed 78% of its revenues in Sep 2010; the same came down to 73% in Sep 2014 on the back of Idea growing faster in its non-3G circles. With Delhi, where the company won 900 MHz spectrum in the Feb 2014 auctions, 3G coverage goes back to 79% of revenues. Among the private operators, Idea continues to cover the highest proportion of its own revenues with 3G.

3G / HSPA / EVDO / Vodafone Revenue Market Share in 3G vs Non 3G Circles
« on: January 08, 2015, 11:53:59 AM »
Even as Vodafone gained 163 bps RMS in the only circle (Kolkata) where it was the only top-3 incumbent to have 3G, its RMS performance has lagged Idea and Aircel, both of whom gained higher RMS (off a lower base, to be fair). Head-to-head with the other two incumbents, Vodafone has done better than Bharti in the 3G circles but underperformed Idea.

Could not copy file. adsense-now-lite/lang/uk_UE_easy-common.mo

the problem is due to the fact that you are running out of allocated disk space. We found out on one of our friend's blog that her allocated space was exhausted and thus she was seeing this message.

Other problem could be due to Directory Permissions, but this is very remote a chance unless you have logged into shell account and have messed it up.

3G / HSPA / EVDO / 900MHz vs 2100MHz Spectrum for 3G
« on: January 05, 2015, 11:25:25 AM »
With the release of one block in the 2100 spectrum likely, telcos will need to evaluate between the 900 and 2100 bands. The question will be more relevant for telcos not facing renewal in the 900 band in a particular circle as for them both options will be applicable with no obligation to renew the 900. In our view, the spectrum price will be only one of the elements and other factors such as better coverage (resulting in lower opex and capex) and robust in-building coverage (more so as getting permission for new towers is not easy) will play a role too. Separately we think GSM new entrants (such as Uninor (NR) with no data spectrum at all) may consider bidding for spectrum in the 2100 MHz band.

In our view, the telecom ministry may not find it easy to release more than 5 MHz of spectrum in the 2100 band (as supply may exceed immediate demand and dilute monetization). Further, in our view, the DoT may decide to revise up the reserve price for 2100 spectrum band (the price for the 2100 band may be fixed at par with the 2010 auction price, in our view). Nevertheless even if one block of spectrum in the 2100 band is made available and the auction of the 2100 band takes place simultaneously with the 900 spectrum auctions

Technology / How are GDL entities of SingTel run?
« on: December 23, 2014, 04:38:50 PM »
SingTel Telecom Conglomerate has invested in few dozen companies ranging from Telecom Services to Applications, Mobile Payments, IT, etc under the Group Digital Life GDL initiative.

GDL entities in which SingTel has made investments are run and managed independently of the telco business we understand. Each of the individual companies has its own boards and also an external board of advisors. For example, Amobee has an independently constituted board, comprising members from SingTel, as well as veterans from the mobile internet/technology space.

Management notes that these companies have a much more youthful composition compared with traditional telcos.

Importantly, so far, GDL hasn?t seen any key acquisition personnel leaving the organisations post the acquisition. There is some form of ?earnout? potential for these employees if/when the business is divested, we understand, but without specific lock-ins.

GDL?s overall approach in making investments will be within the constraints / criteria set by SingTel.

4G / LTE / Why Mobile Data is Expensive & not Scalable ?
« on: December 23, 2014, 04:23:07 PM »
Unlike voice, Data is not scalable, and coverage of a particular BTS/Node-B shrinks as the number of subscribers or usage per subscriber increases on that BTS/Node-B. Moreover, a lower amount of spectrum with operators, 3G spectrum?s being on the relatively inferior 2100 MHz band and limited existing infrastructure/lower tower count require Bharti to expand its BTS footprint to expand coverage/build capacity. This will drive network opex increases. In addition, blended ARPUs (revenues) are unlikely to increase meaningfully due to the data vs. voice trade-off.

Technology / Connected Cars - Cameras & Machine Vision
« on: December 22, 2014, 02:09:25 PM »
Camera applications have the inherent advantage of processing extremely rich data in much the same way the human eye does?in the sense that they can ?see?. Of course, this is easier said than done in that ?seeing? requires tremendous advances in software ingenuity (machine vision) and computing power. This likely explains why the industry initially opted to utilize radar for forward-facing applications.

However, even before the advances that occurred in vision software/computing power, cameras had the distinct advantage of having a technical monopoly on certain applications like lane-departure warning (LDW), intelligent headlamp control (IHC), traffic sign/light recognition (TSR/TLR) and object classification.

Technology / Connected Cars - Laser/LIDAR Sensors
« on: December 22, 2014, 02:07:05 PM »
LIDAR stands for Laser Imaging Detection Ranging. As its name suggests, LIDAR emits laser light and analyzes the reflection in a similar concept as radar. There are different types of LIDAR. A relatively simple short range 3-beam LIDAR sensor has been used for autonomous braking at low-speeds, mainly in Europe. While effective for its designed mission and price point, the 3- beam LIDAR is unlikely to be competitive with camera solutions and are therefore unlikely to maintain their dominant position in low-speed emergency braking.

?Flash? LIDARs are also worth watching as emerging technologies. ASCar Inc. is one of the leaders in this vertical. Flash LIDARs consist
of an array of fixed laser beams that collect incoming data with an image sensor. The system promises lightweight 3D imaging with a single laser pulse and direct range calculation that doesn?t rely on complex lens disparity as in stereo cameras.

Technology / Radar for Connected Cars - ADAS Sensors
« on: December 22, 2014, 02:04:10 PM »
Like any automotive-grade application, the recipe for success in ADASrequires best-in-class performance, minimal errors, a long lifespan, a lowest cost solution and lightweight/compact packaging.

Radars (Radio Angle Detection and Ranging) uses emitted microwaves and reflected signals to detect objects. Automotive radars are typically classified by their range?long-range 77GHz and short-range 24GHz. During the initial onset of ADAS in the early-2000s, radar was a natural first choice sensor because of its ability to detect metal objects in a manner that?s unaffected by weather. As a result, radar has been used extensively in side-facing applications like blind spot warnings where detection of metal objects in varying weather conditions accomplishes the mission

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), electronic stability control systems, braking systems and other active/passive safety systems are increasingly encouraged by regulators in Europe and the US. Auto safety technology has high barriers to entry due to cross-sector hardware/software integration demands and is very much in a growth stage. Nevertheless, auto electronics companies from Greater China could potentially tap into the market opportunities by forming JVs with international OEMs in China, or focusing on specific components in the auto safety value chain, such as auto cameras, smart airbags, sensors and radars

3G / HSPA / EVDO / Bharti Infratel to takeover Viom Networks ?
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:16:50 AM »
By end of FY15E will have close to Rs 6,000 crore cash which is a dampener on the return ratios. Secondly, the company cannot pay IPO proceeds as dividend to shareholders? a very inefficient method of utilizing IPO proceeds. A telecom tower company with anchor tenants can be significantly leveraged to improve the return ratios and thereby improving its capital efficiency. For Bharti Infratel acquisition is the best possible option for improving the capital efficiency and growth prospects.

Viom Networks [Tata Group's  + SREI Infrastructure Telecom Tower Assets] has a portfolio of 42,000 accounting for a market share of around 12%. Bharti Infratel + Indus Towers with a portfolio of around 150 thousand have a market share of around 43%. With the acquisition of Viom Networks, the combined market share will be around 55%. This presents significant industry consolidation and should result in significant increase in pricing power.

Technology / WeChat's Tencent gets Mobile Banking License in China
« on: December 18, 2014, 12:31:33 PM »
The privately owned bank led by a Shenzhen-based consortium, which includes Tencent and 9 other investors, obtained approvals to start operations from the China Banking Regulatory Commission.

We believe Tencent and the privately owned bank will build close ties leveraging its huge user base, which has 468m and 542m monthly active users in Weixin/WeChat and Mobile QQ in smartphones, respectively, by end of 3Q14, as well as its big data capabilities. Despite that the detailed business models and service offerings have yet to be announced, we believe it can strengthen existing service offerings in payments, wealth management and money transfer. In the long term, we believe the potential synergies (e.g., micro-loan financing) with public accounts have yet to be exploited. In addition, the approval also lessens part of the concerns for Internet companies participating in financial services in early March 2014.
