Technology / Facebook Marketplace - C2C platform connecting buyers and sellers

Its first in-app commerce feature came with launch of Facebook Marketplace in Oct-2016, which is a C2C (customer-to-customer) marketplace. The peer-to-peer service enables access to items which are available for a user within a neighborhood. The advantage of the Marketplace at launch was no commission on transactions, but the fulfilment of delivery was responsibility of the seller. The transaction would also happen outside the platform and the buyer and seller can engage on Messenger chat service. This opened up an opportunity for monetization through advertising by seller, which would help the seller to direct traffic to their inventory within Marketplace.

In 2019, Facebook acquired Packagd—video-shopping startup—which would build a live shopping feature in Marketplace. This would let users make purchases while watching live video broadcasts.

This comes on the back of the macro headwinds that were affecting the company’s historical strong growth momentum. Assuming that the current crisis is contained to a large extent before Jun’21, we cut our billings estimates for Naukri and 99acres over FY20-22E, which in turn negatively
impacts our standalone revenue estimates for FY20/21/22 by -3%/-12%/-14%.

The DoT - Department of Telecom has WPC (Wireless Planning and Co-Ordination Wing) which accepts applications from Telecom Companies for allotting them permission to install towers with appropriate BTS equipment required for Mobile / 4G Services.

Since the DoT is migrating the Platform, temporarily all operators and stake holders are required to send e-mail as per notification of WPC dated 18/10/2019.

Key revival package constituents – (1) administrative allotment of LTE spectrum to BSNL and MTNL; the government to infuse Rs200 bn capital to fund the purchase. The money, anyway, comes back to the exchequer in the form of spectrum sale proceeds and there is no fiscal impact per se.

VRS package for all employees above 50 years of age; we note that BSNL employs 160,000+ employees while MTNL employs 22,000+; total cost of Rs300 bn would be borne by the exchequer; this would be fiscal hit but will likely be spread over a couple of years
as the companies finalize the details and roll out the scheme.

Asset monetization of Rs380 bn by the two telecom PSUs over the next four years; these would primarily be surplus real estate assets, in our view, but could include sale and leaseback of tower and fiber assets as well, and (5) merger of MTNL into BSNL; this would take some time given that MTNL is a listed entity. As a first step, MTNL would be made a subsidiary of BSNL by a likely transfer of the government’s holding in MTNL to BSNL. The merger could face challenges from the two employee unions, as in the past.

LTE availability – with a score of 80.2%, Bharti has closed the gap considerably versus R-Jio. Jio's score stood at 97.8% in the latest report and it had crossed the 95% mark in Oct 2017 itself. Airtel'sLTE availability stood at 57% in Oct 2017, 38 ppt lower than Jio.
This Network Availability is in 50 Top Urban Conglomerations of India

Vodafone Idea availability score for Oct 2019 stood at around 77%, nearly the same as the Apr 2019 report. This is in line with the company’s stated strategy of prioritizing improved competitiveness in focused Quad A/B markets versus going for coverage expansion. VIL seems to be delivering well – while the coverage/availability metric has not improved, speeds have seen an impressive jump.

Jio is the most consistent network on network speeds and video experience topping the chart on these parameters in 28/42 and 27/42 cities, respectively.

FTTH Broadband / Jio Fiber – to target Hathway/Den/BSNL Broadband Consumers

RJio plans to roll out Jio Fiber across 1,600 cities with target of ~20 mn residences and ~15 mn businesses through FTTH
(and not through cable). RJio’s plans seem aggressive, as total home broadband connections in
India stands at just 18.4 mn till date with only 0.16 mn net additions in last 2 years. Earlier, RJio’s management had agreed
that the last mile FTTH connectivity to homes will require hard work.

FTTH (fiber) penetration is low in India (only 1.2 mn connected homes) – an opportunity. An opportunity for RJio to rapidly
gain market share from:-
- 25 mn Hathway/Den homes
- 10 mn BSNL customers, who may switch for better services at attractive prices

RIL holds 72% stake in Hathway and 78.1% stake in Den Networks. Acquisitions were for (i) last mile connectivity of its GigaFiber and (ii) expediting customer acquisition for GigaFiber (gives access to 30k + LCOs and 24 mn homes in 750 cities). RJio plans to drive penetration in existing Den/Hathway connected homes through infrastructure upgrade, distribution and offering more services using their networks
