IoT, M2M, and big data analytics

From the MWC China

Cross-industry collaboration can be easily demonstrated in the space of IoT, M2M and big data. Korea Telecom [KT] expects operators? role to evolve from connectivity ? maximising the number of connected things on the IoT platform ? to data intelligence ? creating differentiated value via big data and UX evolution. In the 5G era, the IoT service model of a telecom operator will be based on strengthening its core competencies ? data collection, storage, and analysis ? and to redefine the service boundary to provide innovative converged business services across various industries, such as energy, transportation, etc.

For instance, one of the convergence services KT emphasises is networked transportation. An intelligent transportation platform infrastructure connected with multiple channels, such as CCTV and cars, can process data from various related sources, e.g. climate and disaster information and map and driving information. With all this data and information on the platform, telcos can provide cross-sector multifunctional solutions to its customers, from damage alerts and smart parking, to usage-based insurance.

From Samsung's perspective, IoT technology will develop through stages; from sensor technologies, to wireless communication and networking, to smart technology and computing, to actuators (nano tech). Sensor technologies involve detection of changes and data collection and processing. Wireless communication and networking enables communication between machines as well as the sensors and the system. Smart technologies and computing will leverage the cloud to enhance the power of the network. Actuators (nano tech) allow the ever smaller things to connect and interact.

Under this IoT technology structure, devices of different sizes, people and platforms such as cloud can be well-connected and interact with one another on raw data and solution services after computing and analysing. Samsung expects 90% of its devices will be IoT-enabled by 2017and reach 100% in five years. Collaboration with major IoT players is critical to creating an integrated experience.
