Key benefits include: 1) saving space in the phone: The 3.5mm jack is over 50 years old and doesn’t do much besides carrying an audio signal. It needs its own power amplifier and digital audio converter, which can be built into headphones, so removing the jack makes room for other things, such as a second speaker. iPhone7 has included a lightning-to-3.5mm adapter for a transition period. Apple unveiled three new offerings – new iPhone, Apple Pay and Apple Watch. iPhone 6/6 Plus launch was much in line with expectations.

iPhone 6/6 Plus upgrades are much in line with leaked reports. Thinner (6.8/7.1mm vs. 5s 7.6mm), faster (A8 processor), better display resolution and bigger battery. Camera is in line to stay with 8MP/f2.2 and Plus comes with OIS function. While there is limited surprise to spec, iPhone 6 Plus looks fairly attractive given richer spec but only US$100 premium. Analyzing the iPhone 5S Sales & AAC Impact

Apple sold 9mn+ new iPhones in the first weekend, higher than last September’s 5mn+. Although Apple added China (2mn+ units of iPhone 5 were sold in the first weekend last December) and NTT DoCoMo in the initial launch this year, the 9mn+ shipments were still higher than consensus of 5-8mn, thus being viewed as a positive surprise. iPhone Gains Revenue Share in India

Apple’s Most Innovative product – iPhone accounted for 16% of India’s smartphone market revenue in the Dec Q or a 400% increase in share, according to IDC. Apple drove the improvement by increasing distribution, launching payment plans that lower the upfront cost of the phone, and improving the ecosystem as the iTunes Store went online in December.

While shipments are still very low, it is important to prove success in other BRIC countries beyond China for Apple’s Long Term Strategy which includes AppStores and Cloud Services.
