What is the Significance of China Mobile’s recently launched a Fetion public account platform ? The basic feature of the platform is straightforward in that users are able to add a public account as a friend. A large number of derivative services have been developed by account operators, leveraging Weixin’s features such as multimedia interaction and an internally HTML5-enabled internet browser.

These services include:
RSS-like feeds Media accounts such as Donews or Techweb push articles everyday to followers.

Mini tools This type of account allows users to take notes or arrange appointments by interacting with the account. E.g. Users send text or voice message to an Evernote Weixin account and the content is stored.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)Brands are able to use their Weixin accounts to communicate with customers on a one-on-one basis. Clients of China Merchants Bank are able to quickly check their credit card status via CMB’s Weixin account.

Mobile Chipset – Fabless getting Faster and Better

China produced over 800mn smartphones in 2012 and 226mn smartphones. China’s smartphone output should exceed 400mn in 2013 with exports reaching 60-80mn. At the same time, Mediatek expressed confidence that its quad-core chipsets can enable China OEMs to sell smartphones with similar specs to the Samsung Galaxy S3 at one third of the price.

Meanwhile, ARM has showcased its big.LITTLE chipset, a game changer in the performance/power race. As big.LITTLE finds its way into low-priced phones, we expect chipset ASPs to fall even further, albeit with higher volumes. With big.LITTLE chipset expected in tablets this year (10m targets) and in phones perhaps next year (with an integrated chipset) and LTE modem ramping in Q4Cheaper chipsets could ultimately accelerate tablet demand in China and other EMs, as consumers move away from notebooks.

Rising Use of Mobile for E-Commerce in China – Report

According to CNNIC, online shopping transactions in China reached RMB1.26t in 2012, up 67% YoY and representing 6.1% of the country’s total retail sales. The country’s online shopping population reached 242m (up 25% YoY), representing a 43% penetration rate of the total online population. Mobile shoppers saw much stronger growth. The number of those conducting e-commerce on mobile devices increased by some 137% YoY, reaching 55.4m as of 2012

Over 56% of total online shoppers spent more than RMB1,000 in the year, while some 6.8% of them spent as much as RMB10k online. Meanwhile, people tended to make online purchase more frequently than 2011.

In our view, a majority of current social ads are just “ads on social platforms” rather than “social-enabled ads”. These advertisements seem to boast no prominent differences with display ads on other online platforms (e.g. portals), which are primarily delivered on the back of user reach and visits.
