Jio’s 4G Plan Pricing to Mislead Airtel, Vodafone, Idea

Jio Commercial Plans MisleadingReliance Jio announced it has filed tariff plans with TRAI. These would be applicable from 1st Jan-17, post-expiry of the free service offer, renamed as Jio Welcome Offer . Akash Ambani appears to have mastered the lessons of Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and has hit Airtel, Vodafone and Idea where it matters most – Voice Revenues which account for 75% of their Billing.

We do not think Jio’s plans would have a significant impact on mass mobile broadband data market with ARPU of Rs200 400, because (as per Jio media release), there are no monthly packs

Google’s Low Cost Car Pooling via Waze to cut Uber’s Dominance

Google Car Pooling to Cut Uber BusinessGoogle plans to offer carpooling service via its Waze app to the broader San Francisco area beginning Fall 2016. The company originally tested carpool services with Waze in Israel in 2015 (now broadly available in Israel), and then launched a pilot program near its CA headquarters in May 2016. The next step is reportedly the San Francisco pilot for roughly 25k employees of large San Francisco firms including Wal-Mart Stores and Adobe, in which riders will be limited to two rides a day (for commute). Longer-term, the plan appears to be a broader SF roll-out for all Waze app users in the area.

Waze is a popular navigation app in which users can post notifications and alerts about traffic, accidents, police activity, etc. Google acquired Waze in 2013 for $966mn, which has grown to 65mn active users and continues as its own unit within Google. The carpool feature is similar to that of Uber and Lyft, but not exactly apples to apples. Whereas the latter focuses on a taxi-like service, Waze carpool aims to connect riders to drivers already going a

Jio Gets Aggressive to Push VoLTE SmartPhones

Long Queues for JIO SIMsAkash Ambani managed Reliance Jio Infocomm has launched VoLTE service [Mobile Voice] on a unique ecosystem (850 + 1800/2300MHz) along with 4G Mobile Broadband. A very small number of smartphones will currently work on the Jio ecosystem (<5mn), as <3% of the smartphones have VoLTE capability. However, Reliance insiders say that, Jio has a large inventory of LYF branded phones. In order to encourage VoLTE penetration, we see the possibility of Jio subsidizing the LYF handsets, which may act as a catalyst for increased smartphone growth.

Currently there is awareness about 4G phones and consumers are demanding future ready smartphone (i.e. 4G over 3G), there

Bharti Infratel Tenancy Sluggish, Reliance Jio’s Light Weight Towers

Bharti Infratel Growth SluggishBharti Infratel saw reduction in tenancies currently as the smaller operators are exiting the market. There was a reduction of 1,179 tenancies in this quarter due to such smaller operator exits (Largely Videocon’s Exit). But even excluding the impact of such exits, gross tenancy addition of 2,546 is muted vs the prior four-quarter tenancy addition of 3,185. This suggests that even the Big 3 (Airtel, Vodafone, Idea) have been slow in rolling out tenancies/towers in this quarter, in part seasonal and in part due to the nearness of the upcoming spectrum auctions.

Strong loading on existing sites has led to a ~3% Y/Y increase in average rentals (~Rs 35,039 for Jun-16). Almost all 3G/4G build-out by operators
